Students‘ results are evaluated according to the classification specified in official faculty documents:
a) A - 94 - 100 % excellent (PASS) = 1
b) B - 86 – 93 % very good (PASS) = 1,5
c) C - 76 – 85 % good (PASS) = 2
d) D - 66 – 75 % satisfactory (PASS) = 2,5
e) E - 56 – 65 % sufficient (PASS) = 3
f) FX - 0 – 55 % insufficient (FAIL)= 4.
|Learning outcomes of the course unit:|
|The goal of this course is to provide students introduction to technologies used in modern computer networks -- give students basic understanding of principles of communication using the ISO/OSI and TCP/IP communication paradigms. The course is focused on analysis of technologies and protocols on all layers of the layered model of network communication. It also provides an introduction to Cisco network equipment, using freely available Cisco documentation.|
|1. Introduction to computer networks -- basic terminology, concepts and constructs (bandwidth, connection oriented an connectionless communication, network classification)
2. Intranet, Extranet, Network devices and topology (physical and logical). Active and passive network components, medium access methods.
3. Layered model of network communication, interconnection of open systems, ISO/OSI reference model, TCP/IP network model.
4. Characteristics of current networking technologies and solutions, QoS.
5. Technologies on PHY layer of network communication -- structured cabling, wireless transfer, IEEE standardization.
6. Protocols and mechanisms on DL layer of network communication. Ethernet.
7. Addressing and routing in IPv4, classfull and classles routing , subnetworks and supernetworks, network mask.
8. Protocols and mechanisms on transport layer of network communication. TCP and UDP, Domain Name System.
9. Active network nodes, introduction to routers and switches. Cisco networking hardware architecture, Cisco IOS, routing protocols (RIP and OSPF).
10. Security in computer networks, Secure Socket Layer, usage of PKI, security in wireless networks.
11. Application layer protocols -- protocol HTTP and web technologies, SMTP.
12. New network technologies and communication infrastructure development. Addresing and routing in IPv6.
